Japanese style Halloween

These are my opinions about Halloween in Japan. Especially, the biased report by Japanese media.

First, why does the Japanese media report only one side such as Halloween = Shibuya, young people ,horse play, trouble ? Is it just because easy to increase an access frequency?

Secondly, why do net work citizens slander the Halloween event just because of the secondary information? Why cant they see it from another point of view like more long term perspective? Do they want to say complain about Halloween without thought about whether the secondary information is true or not?

Thirdly, I personally think that Japanese style Halloween is OK. We can arrange our own style and just enjoy it for what it is. It has already spread to children and various events for parents and children have increased recently and it’s not bad that young people enjoy it with spending a bit of money. It will help the economy.

Also, many people pointed out that young people don’t understand the original meaning of Halloween. Also, it’s too commercialized and it’s for children originally, but no one understands the meaning of origin in the U.S and it’s more commercialized compared to Japan. Furthermore, many adults enjoy dressing up in costumes. To see Japanese authentic festivals (Maturi) , no one knows the original meaning of it and they just join in to have fun. Of course, it’s also commercialized like Japanese Halloween.

Lastly, many people pointed out that Shibuya Halloween meeting caused the trash problem, but it’s the same situation as Japanese authentic festivals. Many adult enjoy dressing up wearing kimono and yukata. Sumidagawa fire works festival also had problems with clean up. I think it’s unfair that the media and net work citizens damp on Halloween. We have to follow the rule at any events anyways. Shibuya Halloween was a bit better because Shibuya district had a campaign with Kary Pamyu Pamyu where they distributed plastic garbage bags before Halloween started. However, it was true some people display bad manners. It’s essential to think the best way of dealing this issue.

I think my thoughts are among the minority, but I was anxious about the biased report by the Japanese media. So, I decided to write my opinion this time. Though,It’s just my personal opinion.

Sightseeing competitiveness in Japan

The result was No. 9. This is the Travel and tourism Competitiveness Report 2015 released by World Economic Forum on May 6th 2015. Japan placed 9th out of 141 countries and regions.

Looking in more detail data,  Japans advantage points were customer correspondence, rail road infrastructure, safety of drinking water and intangible cultural heritage. By contrast, Japans weak points were gas prices and tax fees such as income tax and consumption tax.

I think ranking at 9th isn’t bad, because Japanese government started to appeal about Cool Japan just few years ago. In travelers point of view, I think there are still inconvenient things such as credit cards not being accepted in many stores , also that ATMs at many convenience stores do not accept over seas debit cards.

I personally hope that a lot of more travelers will come to Japan and go back with good memories. So, I think we need to prepare not only opportunities to travel in comfort, but also to prepare more cultural curiosity.

In 2013, Washoku(Japanese food) was authorized as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO and it became a hot topic. However, Japans intangible cultural heritages basically existed from ancient times and necessary to protect

such as Noh, paper ballad drama and Kabuki. I think these cultures are still popular among travelers, but there are some gap from travelers culture curiosity.

TimeOut Tokyo, a free paper for travelers that I got recently introduces  a lot of fun things to do in latest Tokyo that must hit your cultural interests.

It has a lot of fun things to do and information like Kary Pamyu Pamyu, B-grade gourmet, Izakaya, canned foods, Japanimation, public bath and video game that are now the driving force behind Japanese culture.
In addition, not only does it it describe famous spots and events, but also new cultures that is happening in Tokyo and why. I think it will help travelers understand more in depth and satisfy their experiment.

I think that if the Japanese government wants to raise their sightseeing competitiveness, they need to make it easy to experience Japanese culture. Visitors are interested in it so we need to remove the language barrier.
Its a good idea to appeal Japanese culture at overseas exhibitions, but Id like to ask the Japanese government to prepare a lot of contents that make it more comfortable for travelers towards the 2020 Olympic games.

Japanese Vending machine

As for Japanese vending machine, people can buy everything we imagine that not only beverages, but also foods such as oden and banana, and others such as umbrella and underwear.  Also, there are some vending machine that sell adult only items such as tobacco, alcohol and porn magazine since my childhood.

It's  vending machine paradise in Japan and I'd like to describe about good and bad of vending machine this time.

Please take a look this video first.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZZmUuRG87sU

First, the data of Japanese vending machine that is introduced in the video is that  1 vending machine for every 23 people, 7 trillion yen (7 million dollars) in sales yearly (5 trillion yen in 2012), over 5 million vending machine nationwide, 1,400,000 yen per machine annually(About $15,000), electricity bill per month 4,300 yen. I thought it wasn't  a bad business when I saw this data.

After increasing vending machines in Japan, it's said that the vending machine is helpful in the case of disaster as stock drinks and illuminated function is good for crime-prevention and then, it's expected that the role of contribution to society as public facilities.

As I described, the vending machine makes a profit and helps to contribution to society, but it's not popular in the U.S. We have chance to see them only in cafeterias in school. Why? It's no way to set it up outdoors. If so, someone will take it, rather than money  stolen. The reason why there are so many vending machines outdoors  in Japan is that Japan is safer and cleaner. I understand that American people said that we can get drinks at convenience stores and gas stations. Also, having fewer  pedestrians is another reason especially in LA.

Meanwhile, there are not only good side but also some bad side in Japan. These issues have been there from long time ago, but energy and landscape are still big issues.

After the earthquake disaster, The word of "saving energy" became the hot topic in Japan and then, new style vending machine such as led illuminated type and automatic stop heating and cooling function during unnecessary time was created. Also, hi-tech version which has fuel cell for saving more energy is developing now. these quick action is only possible with Japanese people. These technology will improve soon like car industry situation.

As for landscape issue, the thought that refrain from using vivid color and fit to the environment is getting familiar. I agree with this movement, but on the other hand, it contradicts the original thought of increasing more distinctive looking and sales more.

However, I think that the thought of "more sales" is  no longer difficult to get socially acceptance, because there are tons of vending machines already and has became public facilities. There is no choice to set some guideline to control about vending machines.

I think vending machine suppliers should make new value of vending machine not only the direction of "hide from environment" such as using same color with the surrounding buildings and making bump shape to avoid from stick out from a building.

For instance, making new style which almost looks like art and producing the oasis including surrounding environment in a city area not only designing a vending machine itself. I think it's about time to change the old concept of easy to put, easy to earn money and easy to get drinks 7 days and 24 hours.

As I introduce the video in this article, many American people think that Japanese vending machine is high-tech and cool. However I hope vending machine suppliers will produce the new value vending machine, not the direction of convenience such as buying by mobile phone and full TFT touch control monitor type and not accept American people's kind offers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZZmUuRG87sU

Culture gap in wedding Japan & U.S.

One divorce scandal of a certain celebrity became a hot topic in Japan, but speaking of June, it's a season of wedding. "June bride" a bride who has a wedding ceremony in June must be happy. This phrase has been already rooted in Japan. However, there are still a lot of differences between the U.S. and Japan in wedding culture and I did a research on it this time.

Wedding ceremony  itself is not so different between two countries if we have a ceremony in church not Shinto-style wedding. However, there are a lot of differences in wedding reception between the U.S. and Japan.

First of all, guests can take their partner in the U.S, but basically, guests are not allowed to take their partner in Japan. In Japanese style wedding, sometime guests feel lonely when there is no friends, but in the U.S, there is no concern about it.  However it requires you to have a partner.

Next, in the U.S, there is no custom that guests give gift money in special envelopes called goshuugi in Japan. In the U.S, registry system is popular that couples make their wish list and register it on a department store web site. Then, guests buy an item from this list within their budget and send it before the wedding reception. Thus, there is no concern about receiving same gifts and unwanted items. It's really convenient and even if you change your mind later, gift receipt allows you to return or exchange. However, if guests access the web site too late, it could be that there are only expensive items left on the list. In addition, it's common to cover  wedding reception expense with gift money that couples receive from guests in Japan, but couples in the U.S. have to cover this expense by themselves, because they can not receive gift money like  in Japan or even if they do, it's not enough.

Third, In the U.S style reception, there is no go-between to arrange a marriage between couples called nakoudo in Japan. There are bridesmaids for brides and best men for grooms who wear same dress or bow tie and support bride and groom instead. I think many Japanese people have seen this scene in the U.S. movie.

In addition, there is the custom to have a final single party before their wedding ceremony in the U.S. In this party, they seem to really make a racket with each other. Men go to a strip bar and women go to a male strip bar which are not shown to partner. It's called "bachelor party" for groom side and "bridal shower" for bride side. bachelor party is held between only men and bridal shower is held between only women. These parties are conducted by their brothers and sisters, their friend and relatives with the meaning of their celebration.

Wedding reception itself, Japanese style has a lot of programs and foods to give hospitality to guests and it's known for the biggest event in their life. By contrast, U.S. style focuses on more casual and celebrating bride and groom with drinking, eating and dancing. So, guests don't have to hear long and boring speech like in Japan. In addition, come to think of other big difference, it's common to dance after they have a meal in the U.S. There is a custom that unless bride and groom do a first dance, others are not allowed to go to the dance floor. This dance time is too long. Three hours is not special. So, guests start to leave gradually after saying good-bye to new couple during dance time. In Japan, bride read a letter for their parents and then the wedding reception going to a dramatic finale. Then, bride and groom send off guests at the gate. Compared to Japanese style, U.S style is more simple and casual without souvenir gifts that is common custom called hikidemono in Japan.

In this way, even though Japan is importing western style wedding, there are still a lot of wedding culture difference between U.S. and Japan. Japanese original culture of being polite and respectful to someone makes these kind of differences. There are variety of rules in wedding ceremony and reception in Japan such as the way of writing invitation cards, the way of returning a card, gift money shouldn't break by two and some NG words in a speech. However, I think these considerations are the one of the good wedding culture in Japan at the same time. As the American people's point of view, these customs look weird and complicating, but I think these culture gaps are really interesting and there is no need to change.

However, I hope bachelor party and bridal shower are imported to Japan.

Why are there so many events to celebrate kid's growth in Japan?

March 3rd is Girls festival(Momo-no-sekku) day in Japan and  Japanese parents celebrate their girls growth with displaying gorgeous dolls as Doll’s Festival(Hina-matsuri) Also, on May 5th, they celebrate their boys growth with flying carp-streamers as Boy's Day(Tango-no-sekku)
In addition, there is an another event called The Seven-Five-Three Festival in Japan. On the day of the festival, parents with boys aged three and five, and girls aged three and seven dress their children in kimono and take them to shrines where they pray for their children's future health and well-being.

There are also Obiiwai-obi-tying ceremony designed to ensure safe birth of a child, Omiyamairi-visiting a Shinto shrine after a child's birth, Okuihajime-first eating ceremony after 100 days from child's birth and Seijinshiki-celebrating 20 years old growth as a final event.

Thus, there are a lot of traditional events to celebrate growth of children in Japan. The more I research these events, the more I realize there are a lot of meanings in the costume and food that are used in these events. Then I feel how wonderful older generation people express their thankfulness for growth of children.
There are also events to celebrate changing seasons like Setsubun-The close of winter and Tanabata-The star festival. Additionally, if adding imported events from Western counties such as Christmas, there are tons of events in Japan. Without a doubt, we can call Japan as a big event celebration nation.

In contrast, there are St. Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas in the U.S. I realized that all events are related to Christian except Halloween and Thanksgiving.
As children's point of the view, Christmas and Halloween are fun events for kids because they get gifts. However, looking at the original meaning of these events, they are celebrating for the birthday and resurrection of Christ or appreciate for Indian and harvest NOT celebrating children's growth.
American parents celebrate their children's birthday with great alacrity instead.
Especially, there is a custom in the U.S that parents celebrate girls 16's birthday called sweet sixteen as becoming from girl to adult lady.

Why are there so many events to celebrate kid's growth in Japan?

As Japanese people may know in ancient time in Japan, people think it's happy and lucky if children would grow up smoothly, because the environment for kid's growth was not good in the nourishment side, hygiene side and medical care side. So, in the society of a court noble and samurai family in Heian era, they conducted these events that were introduced above and celebrated their children's growth.

In contrast, why are there not so many events to celebrate in the U.S?
I think American history is not that long compared to Japan and modernized so rapidly. So, American people could think it's common thing that children grow smoothly which is why they didn't develop events to celebrate kid's growth purposely.

Now, technology improved in the nourishment side, hygiene side and medical care side. So, it became a rare case that children die from these reasons like old time Japan, but at the same time, cases where children die from car accidents and suicide are increasing in modern society. Japanese people should continue these events with realizing the meaning of these events that has been passed down from generation to generation and we should keep reminding ourselves to appreciate kid's growth. We don't want these to be "just" commercial event, because they have historical ceremony. I wonder if it would be better if there are similar events in the U.S, isn't it?

IKUMEN situation in Japan and the U.S

IKUMEN-fathers who take part in child care are increasing in Japan, but American fathers participate much more. Many American fathers participate in their children's school events even they are held in weekdays and it's a common thing that they have dinner with their family. In addition, there is an atmosphere that we are allowed to do this in the U.S.
According to the internet, it's under one hour that Japanese fathers take part in child care and house work in one day. In contrast, it reaches three hours in the U.S and Sweden. Also, Japanese situation is the worst in the advanced countries. Meanwhile, the total time of house work and child care that are covered by Japanese women are longer than other advanced countries. So, in Japan, women still have to bear the burden in house work and child care.

Why can American fathers take part in child care three times longer than Japanese fathers?

First, as you may know, the biggest reason is the difference of the labor environment such as over work and social drink. In Japan, 43% of the people do extra work over 50 hours per week. In contrast, American people do only 17%. In this way, the labor environment in the U.S is better than Japan.
I think it's influenced by the existence of the Christian faith. In Christian thought, family ties is very important and it's not good to sacrifice family to work overtime and to do other things. So, many American people think spending time with family is the best priority than spending time for overtime work and social drinking.
There is nothing in the U.S that people can't go home until their boss leaves, drinking with their boss as a social communication and working until mid night everyday like in Japan.
Also, the thought of "work balance" that is focused on the balance of work and private time appeared in the 90's. As the result, flextime rule started and then, the labor condition that people can control the balance of work and private had been getting better.

The thinking of sexual division of labor such as men work outside and women do       housework still remain in Japan. From Japanese men's point of view, they think that "how can I get enough time to take part in child care and to spend time with my family? " It's not true that they don't want to take part in child care. The tough situation in terms of time and mental atmosphere makes them suffer.
Many mothers think that my husband doesn't take part in child care, but it's not his fault. The bad labor environment and society makes him unable to join.

Sharing child care by father gives mothers room to relax physically, time and mentally. It's true and in this regard, Japanese society where father is tied long time in office is really unhappy. In this situation fathers can't meet their children because of getting home late in week days. it's easy to understand that mothers who are in charge of child care with 24 hours a day become child care stress. Also, mothers tend to stand alone because of no help in the nuclear family society.

Japanese fathers say "I work overtime for my family" but once I saw the American way, I think it would be happier that fathers do NOT work overtime for family.

Japanese farmer couples used to share their all works like agricultural work and child care. So, the word "IKUMEN" is not a new trend in Japan. It used to be a common thing in old days.

In account of the modernization, the thought of "men work outside and women do house work" made root in Japanese society, but it's about time to rethink our style using American way and old Japanese life style as a reference isn't it?
