Japanese style bullying

One thing that I found surprising since I came back to Japan is that bullying occurs insistently one person on the internet. I can understand if people attack who committed a crime or did a antisocial behavior, but there are a lot of people who were attacked without any reason, just with idle rumors or their visual image.

For instance, my favorite pop artist Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is one of them. She is popular for her outrageous fashion and her promotion video with her view of the world, but at the same time, she has become a target of abuse on the internet. “She lip-syncs and she’s wanna-be artist" “She is promiscuous women see with various men” are typical comments. However, if you check throughly, you will realize easily that these information are not true, and her music is a techno pop produced by Yasutaka Nakata and her voice is one part of instruments. Also, she is single and she has been going steady with her partner and she has never been unloyal. It’s just bogus information generated by gossip magazines.

There are too many people who attack one particular individual on the internet to make people believe everything the silly news said.  Furthermore, it is relentless. This is a typical pattern that mass media sets on one particular person up as the villain by picking flaws and caviling to get more traffic and to manipulate those who read the information.

When I was a child, media meant TV or paper print like newspapers or magazines and we couldn't check the news was true or not. However, no one believed these gossip indulgers were true. Now, we can check them easily on the internet whether it is in fact true. I want to know why do people believe material without checking first?

Besides, I have always believed that Japanese people are very considerate,  deep thinking before expressing their opinions and choosing their words carefully. Yet, I can’t understand what happening with Japanese people that they are ambiguous with the information.

Perhaps this is because Japanese people who can’t express what they want to say in their daily life feel the need to burn off their stress? It’s not so important that information is true or not, it’s OK if it’s amusing for them, I guess?

It’s the other side of typical Japanese character-modesty and consideration that have been praised for a long time, hasn't it? However, I think it’s unfair that people fling harsh words at one individual anonymously.

I personally think that we should think more deeply before we express our opinion and we should select words that are not discriminating.
I hope that Japanese people will be recognized as modest people even if its from the internet.

p.s. She expresses what she thinking about her difficulties that I described in this essay in her new song called “Mondai girl”

Japanese Whisky

I mentioned in my previous essay that craft beer is booming in Japan and that whisky is becoming more popular recovering from bust period before.
The TV drama called “Massan” which focuses on two Japanese men who made Japan’s first whisky. This could be one reason why.

I’m beer person, but recently, I have been showing interest in whisky as well. Whisky with rich flavor are affected by climate, soil, material of barrel and aging period attracted me to drink more of it.

Japanese whisky first started 91 years ago in 1923. Shingiro Torii -the founder of Kotobukiya (later to become Suntory) hired Masataka Taketsuru as a distillery executive who had studied the art of distilling in Scotland. And then decided to build the first Japanese whisky distillery in Yamasaki. After five years, in 1929, he started to sell the first Japanese whisky “Shirofuda”
Before that, there was only imitation whisky which was made by mixing alcohol, sugar and spice. However, the quality of Japanese whisky has improved step by step by their effort following the whisky boom.

After that, Japanese whisky received highly acclaimed world whisky competitions by Japanese serious characters such as more improvement and more effort.
Now, the world’s five biggest whisky distributers include: Scotland, Ireland, America, Canada and Japan. I hope Japanese whisky guys will release more characteristic kind which in hopes, will establish oneself as Japan’s in the future.

Japanese craft beer

One of my concerns was “Can I still enjoy tasty craft beer in Japan?” when I returned from America last year. However, it was no problem at all, or rather, I’m enjoying craft beer much more compared to when I was living in LA.

Recently in Japan, craft beer is becoming more popular and there are a lot of beer serving restaurants with nice domestic and international craft beers in Tokyo. These restaurants also hold beer tasting events and seminars introducing how to enjoy craft beer. These situations make Japanese beer lovers happy, but I still think that America has more advantages in beer setting.

First of all, the price is much cheaper than Japan. If I buy one pint of craft bottle beer in liquor shops, I will have to pay at least 400yen(4$) or more. The reasons are not only cost in Japanese beer tax, but also the different concepts for the tax system. In America, the tax has changed by how much beer they make in a year. So, micro breweries can reduce tax cost. Even though it’s craft beer, American consumers can buy one within 2 to 3$.

Furthermore, the big difference is the regulations in the beer industry. There is no minimum brewing quantity requirement and Americans are allowed home brewing. So, over two thousands breweries are fighting desperately with each other. As a result, consumers easily can buy a wide variety of craft beers in supermarkets.

I hope these two barriers will die out in the future. I don’t agree with TPP, but I’d like to ask the Japanese government to consider  importing the American business style to propel counteraction .

GUN

Two years ago, I went to LA on business trip and I met an accident that one gang’s car was shot by another gang’s car, then crushed into the fence of the hotel that I stayed at. This was the first time that strongly felt about gun society in the U.S. Also, I had a doubt why guns still exist in the U.S. So, I watched the movie “Bowling for Columbine” directed by Michael Moor. This is a non-fiction movie focused on the affair of shooting to death at Columbine high school in 1999. In this movie, he tried to investigate why the total amount of shooting incidents in the U.S isn’t reduced. He prepared a lot of interesting examples.
For instance, in Canada the rate of having guns per person is higher than in the U.S, but the total amount of shooting incidents is much lower than in the U.S.
Also, he gave the interview to Charles Heston. He was former leader of NRA(National Rifle Association) Finally, he succeeded to stop selling bullets in K-mart, but in 2007 a new terrible massacre was happened at Virginia Tech Univ. Thirty three people were killed. It was about twice as much compared to the Columbine high school massacre. And now, I’m living here in the U.S. So I can’t pass without describing about the gun society in the U.S.

I think there are a lot of reasons why U.S people still have guns. First of all, The biggest reason is the existence of Text of the Bill of Right in United States Constitution in second amendment. It says” A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free state. The right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” So, American people are allowed to have guns by law. And to see the history of America, frontiers fought the native people. After that they took black from Africa as slavery. After they released them from slavery, they had to guard against black. So, U.S history means always fighting. It’s natural to use gun for protecting themselves. So the sprit that our security should be protected by themselves still remain in their heart so deeply. Living without guns means like being naked. And additional to say, the existence of NRA is one of  the big reasons why gun control can’t spread. NRA is the biggest lobby group in the U.S. They have tons of fund and big influence to politicians. Basically, the Democratic Party takes a positive attitude toward the gun control, but they are afraid of NRA. So, no one appeal about gun control even president Obama. That’s  why the total amount of people who were killed by gun is still over ten thousands per year. Compared to the U.S, guns are really well controlled in Japan.

The rate of using gun in total amount of murderer in Japan is three-four percent.
It’s the second best in the world.
So, for us Japanese, the gun is not important something faraway. Our image of guns is that police man and self Deffence Forces are allowed to have them. So I think living in U.S especially in LA, means that we have to be scared about being shot anytime, anywhere. I think people are animals that are easy to get mad. If people have easy more access to use gun, not only for defense, but also guns, they can use them easily for killing people. I hope president Obama will conduct” The gun hunt” from all the people like shogun Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s “Katanagari” (sword hunt) in the future. No gun means no shooting to death. I’d like to live with my family in the place as safe as possible.

Love LA

As saying my personal feeling, I used to like European value and NOT like American one. So, I’ve been thinking that I wanted to live Italia or England in the future when I was university student. However, after I lived in LA for 5 years, I completely think that I love LA now. I know that’s because I came here as Japanese staff who can receive a lot of supports, but I think the word “Sumeda miyako” ( Once you live in a place, it grows on you) is fit my true feeling.

There are tons of advantages of LA such as perfect sky, big house compared to Japan, but I think the biggest reason why I love LA might be that I could understand American culture by living in here and I tried to research their background  through my essay and I realized the reasons finally.

As for my job, I couldn’t understand why American people go home earlier ? or why they can say “No problem” even though we’re in a bad situation like we can’t finish work by deadline that Japanese people say “I worry about ” in my first few years.
However,  I leaned that family ties is important in the U.S and challenging mind should be evaluated most than failure.

As for through my daily life, I also had a lot of questions such as why American dessert is too sweet?, why American meal is so large portion? and why American school is so freedom and fun? However, I think dessert is the part of enjoying sweetness in the U.S, so it’s OK and it’s strange having non-sweetness food for dessert. Also, I leaned that Amrican people don’t worry about stock of food, because America has big land and they can make tons of food, then they are preserved by canning or processed food. So, American food business is appealing big quantity with cheaper price or buy one get two style that is difficult to understand for Japanese people who live in small land.

Also, I envied that American school is so free, but at the same time it’s based on principle of self-responsibility and producing a lot of heroes, but a lot of losers as well.

Meanwhile, if someone ask me what is the biggest culture gap between the U.S and Japan?, I will say that American value is kind of  black or white and Japanese value is tend to gray(average). For instance, Japanese workers are tend to all-rounder and  American workers are excel at something.  As for the average annual salary, it’s similar between two countries, but there are few millionaires and lot of poor people in the U.S and most of all people are middle class in Japan. Also, there are some super healthy and skinny people, but at the same time, some people who don’t care about their health and overweight are in there in the U.S. Simply put, everything has a wide range in the U.S.

I think this value means people acknowledge  with each other . It’s very important, because America is mixed-race nation and it might be not so important in single race and small island country Japan.

In conclusion, I surprised that I finally became a person who love American value and culture which I used to not like. I believe that because, many local friends who are so friendly and kind without prejudice made me change my mind. So, my difficult thing is that I have to say good bye to these great friends.

Finally, living in abroad causes some difficulties, but it has much better things to get.
I want to live other country if I have a chance in the future. Also, my essay counts one hundred twenty three times in total and I will keep writing this essay  from the Japanese point of view after I will go back to Japan. Thank you for reading for long years.

Love LA

Japanese Vending machine

As for Japanese vending machine, people can buy everything we imagine that not only beverages, but also foods such as oden and banana, and others such as umbrella and underwear.  Also, there are some vending machine that sell adult only items such as tobacco, alcohol and porn magazine since my childhood.

It's  vending machine paradise in Japan and I'd like to describe about good and bad of vending machine this time.

Please take a look this video first.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZZmUuRG87sU

First, the data of Japanese vending machine that is introduced in the video is that  1 vending machine for every 23 people, 7 trillion yen (7 million dollars) in sales yearly (5 trillion yen in 2012), over 5 million vending machine nationwide, 1,400,000 yen per machine annually(About $15,000), electricity bill per month 4,300 yen. I thought it wasn't  a bad business when I saw this data.

After increasing vending machines in Japan, it's said that the vending machine is helpful in the case of disaster as stock drinks and illuminated function is good for crime-prevention and then, it's expected that the role of contribution to society as public facilities.

As I described, the vending machine makes a profit and helps to contribution to society, but it's not popular in the U.S. We have chance to see them only in cafeterias in school. Why? It's no way to set it up outdoors. If so, someone will take it, rather than money  stolen. The reason why there are so many vending machines outdoors  in Japan is that Japan is safer and cleaner. I understand that American people said that we can get drinks at convenience stores and gas stations. Also, having fewer  pedestrians is another reason especially in LA.

Meanwhile, there are not only good side but also some bad side in Japan. These issues have been there from long time ago, but energy and landscape are still big issues.

After the earthquake disaster, The word of "saving energy" became the hot topic in Japan and then, new style vending machine such as led illuminated type and automatic stop heating and cooling function during unnecessary time was created. Also, hi-tech version which has fuel cell for saving more energy is developing now. these quick action is only possible with Japanese people. These technology will improve soon like car industry situation.

As for landscape issue, the thought that refrain from using vivid color and fit to the environment is getting familiar. I agree with this movement, but on the other hand, it contradicts the original thought of increasing more distinctive looking and sales more.

However, I think that the thought of "more sales" is  no longer difficult to get socially acceptance, because there are tons of vending machines already and has became public facilities. There is no choice to set some guideline to control about vending machines.

I think vending machine suppliers should make new value of vending machine not only the direction of "hide from environment" such as using same color with the surrounding buildings and making bump shape to avoid from stick out from a building.

For instance, making new style which almost looks like art and producing the oasis including surrounding environment in a city area not only designing a vending machine itself. I think it's about time to change the old concept of easy to put, easy to earn money and easy to get drinks 7 days and 24 hours.

As I introduce the video in this article, many American people think that Japanese vending machine is high-tech and cool. However I hope vending machine suppliers will produce the new value vending machine, not the direction of convenience such as buying by mobile phone and full TFT touch control monitor type and not accept American people's kind offers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZZmUuRG87sU

Amazing Japanese Snack Food

Japanese sweets
I have an acute feeling through my experience living in abroad that how nice Japanese snacks and sweets are. There is no wonder that it's delicious. In addition, it has wide variety of selections and attractive package designs that American snacks have no chance against.

In LA, I can buy Japanese snacks in Japanese super markets, but they are too expensive and I can't get any delicious Japanese sweets that we can buy in convenience stores in Japan. Also, there are some Japanese snack packs in Amazon.com and some Japanese snack lovers order it, but it's bit expensive because, these are imported from Japan, so comments show "It's delicious, but too expensive"

http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Snack-Food/lm/R2ART6RG78NIRB

American snack
As for American snacks situation, simply put, it's boring.
It's huge and cheap. For instance, there are a lot of potato chips in super markets distributed by a lot of makers that I feel it's too much!! However, these chips have really similar flavor. Sour cream, BBQ, Cheddar cheese,,, That's it!! These flavors are easy and strong, then I will get tired of eating.

In Japan, there are more wide variety products and they release new flavors like every month. However, American companies make same product and produce in large volume to sell with cheaper price. So, I never have fun in super markets in the U.S.

Actually, if I give Japanese snack to American friends, most of them say "Wow delicious!! " and looks happy. Also, if you search the words" Japanese snack" on the internet, you can find the web site that some American bloggers are reviewing Japanese snack.

Review site
Then, I was wondering why Japanese snack makers don't accelerate overseas expansion. I never seen any Japanese snacks in supermarkets in the U.S. If they start a local production, they don't have any reason to lose in flavor, texture, wide selection and package design compared to American snacks.
According to the internet, Japanese snack companies used to be inactive about oversea business compared to car and electric companies. However, more companies are accelerating oversea business to Asia and North America recently.

http://quirkspace.com/jsfr/

Especially, Calbee is making effort to achieve ten times the oversea sales. Calbee started to sell their product called "Kappaebisen" in 1970, but the sales scale was really small and they didn't focus on oversea business too much. However, they started to provide their product "Jagabee" to Pepsico and they started to sell the snack "Ruffles Crispy Fries" from last September. The price is cheap only $1.09 and sales is really good so far. The sales result of their oversea business is amazing 63% up in North America, 139% up in China, and 59% up in Korea compared to last year.

Calbee new product
Without realizing, Japanese snack makers have been fighting in the small Japanese market for long time and then they became the top runner who can make the top class quality of snacks. I'd like to ask them to do more oversea business, but I have one request for them. Please do not survey to know local customers too much and keep their original flavor that they believe the best flavor and the best quality. Please do not release a cheddar cheese flavor because of market research result.

 Amazing Japanese Snack Food

 http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Snack-Food/lm/R2ART6RG78NIRB
